The Chinese JIL Research Group: Fellowships and Wang Tieya Prize

 

The Chinese JIL Research Group has been established to promote original research in international law by scholars including graduate students.

 

The working language of the Group is English.

 

 

Fellowships and Prize. 

 

The Research Group aims to select in its complete discretion a number of Fellows each year solely on the basis of research proposals on international law in general (including topics about China) by Chinese scholars and research proposals on international law issues having direct relevance to China by non-Chinese scholars.  Each Fellow will receive a modest award of about US$700 (half paid on designation as Fellow; half on completion of the paper), research guidance from the Editors and Advisors. Each fellow grants the Chinese JIL the right of first refusal on their papers which will be reviewed in the same way as are other submissions.

 

One fellowship is made possible by the generosity of Dr. SHEN Jianming, his law firm SHENLAW, LLC (http://shenlaw.com) and an anonymous donor, and the fellow will be designated as SHENLAW Fellow.  Another fellowship is made possible by the generosity of Prof. ZHANG Yong,

and the fellow will be designated as Zhang Yong Fellow.

 

A special one year Han Depei Fellowship for private international law only has been made possible for 2008 by a donation of RMB6000 from Prof. Huang Jin.  The selection process will be the same as for the other fellows.

 

To honor the memory of Professor Wang Tieya, former President of the Chinese Society of International Law and a founding Co-Editor-in-Chief of this Journal, a Wang Tieya Prize (US$1,000, sponsored by Dr. SHEN Jianming and an anonymous donor) will be awarded for an excellent paper published in this Journal

by a Fellow when such a paper presents itself, in the opinion of the Prize Committee.  There is no need to apply for this Prize.

 

Each applicant is invited to submit one proposal only which will be considered for all the Fellowships as appropriate. The deadline for submission of proposals of no more than 1,000 words only: 10 April of each year. The applicants are advised that other materials such as letters of recommendation are prohibited.  All correspondence must be directed by email (jiabATmail.tsinghua.edu.cn) to Professor Bing Bing Jia, Co-Chair, who will convene a small committee to evaluate the proposals and announce the results as soon as possible.

Chinese JIL Research Group Fellowships: 2006-2007 (May 16, 2006)

 

The Chinese JIL Research Group has the pleasure in appointing Mr. Ming DU, a D. Phil. Candidate at the University of Oxford, the United Kingdom, as Fellow for the year of 2006-2007.  The appointment is made on the basis of the research proposal submitted by the applicant.  The proposed research will be focused on the notion of fair trade in international trade law with a leaning upon the Chinese practice in this field.

 

 

Chinese JIL Research Group Fellowships: 2005-2006 (May 12, 2005)

 

The Chinese JIL Research Group has the pleasure in appointing Katie Lee, Senior Associate of the Great Britain-China Centre in London, the United Kingdom, and LI Dexiang, LL.M. candidate of Peking University, China, as Fellows for the year of 2005-2006.  The appointments are made on the basis of the research proposals submitted by the applicants.  Ms. Lee’s research will be focused on China’s possible ratification of the

International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights of 1966, and

Mr. Li’s paper will deal with the role of the United Nations resident coordinator system.

 

De-Heng Prize, for 2003

 

The De-Heng Prize (ad hoc, sponsored by De-Heng Law Firm), for an Article on Third World Approaches to

International Law published in the Journal in 2003 only.
